Eden had heard eight bells every night since arriving at Saint Vale.

The professors said the ninth was a campus myth told to first-years who could not handle old buildings and older rules. The seniors said nothing at all, which turned out to be worse.

On the night the tower rang nine times, Eden followed the sound to the chapel crypt and found her scholarship contract already waiting on the altar, rewritten in someone else's blood.
